introduction lecture

This was the first lecture for this module so we went through he timetable and what we will be covering and what sort of things to expect from the module.

We touched on aspects of studio photograhy and what is was about. Looking into controlled lighting and the use of light reflectors and backdrops etc.

Below is an image taken by David Bailey of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. We spoke about of we think the photo was taken a what tools and tricks were used to create the image as this photo was taken pre photoshop. We came to the conclusion that there would have been two lights lighting the subjects and then an extra light lighting the background up. This was so that the background didn't cast a shadow around the subjects.

We also looked at the exposure triangle and square (below).

Notes:

 - Pre visualise - planned and designed
 - Post visualise - more of a reaction
 - Ansel Adams  - 'making photographs not taking photographs'
 - studio photography - controlled lighting (not necessarily in a studio)
 - Incidence light - the light falling onto the subject
 - Reflective light - the light reflecting back to the camera
 - David Bailey - 'some personalities are too big to fit into the frame' - his reason for cropping tops of subjects heads off in his photos
